Clinton Supports Ecumenical Patriarchate

U.S. PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON has expressed his full support for the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, in a letter to Archbishop of America Spyridon.

Mr. Clinton described the Patriarchate as "one of the greatest religious institutions in the world", adding, "I wish the Ecumenical Patriarch to know that I unequivocally condemn the recent bomb attack" against the Patriarchate.

He also referred to the "wonderful meeting" his wife, Hillary, and daughter Chelsea, had with Patriarch Vartholomeos, as well as their "moving visit" to the Agios Georgios Orthodox Cathedral in Constantinople a few months ago.

The president ended his letter by saying that his administration would continue to strongly support the right of the Patriarch to freely exercise his religious duties.
