Hellenic College-Holy Cross Board Issues Communique

New York - The Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology Board of Trustees convened Aug. 16 in a special meeting at the Archdiocese in New York City.

His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon of America chaired the meeting which lasted approximately six hours.

The Archbishop and the Board reaffirmed that the College and School of Theology will continue as an accredited institution of higher education and as a graduate theological school.

Trustees were reassured that the institution's accreditation has not been jeopardized. The Archbishop reaffirmed that he wished for the Board to take an active role in the affairs of the College and School of Theology and to participate in the decision-making process of the College and School, consistent with the bylaws and regulations of the School.

The Acting Dean, the Rev. Deacon Dr. John Chryssavgis, briefed the board on new academic appointments and the academic program for 1997-98.

The Archbishop discussed the recent events at the College and the School and trustees offered extensive comments on the situation to the Archbishop.

The Board noted that the Archdiocesan Council Legal Committee was conducting a review of the disciplinary matter and asked that a full report on that matter be presented at the next regular meeting of the Trustees.

The Trustees asked that the Greek Orthodox community be united as the new academic year begins on Aug. 27, and that everyone display responsibility by focusing on the primary goal of the school: to produce priests of spiritual maturity, missionary zeal and academic learning to serve our people in America.
