4 Greek priests ask for jobs back
The four Greek Orthodox priests fired from Hellenic College and Holy Cross School of Theology have asked for their jobs back in a letter mailed last week to the national leader of the Greek Orthodox church.
The four men were fired from the school in Brookline, Mass., at the request of Archbishop Spyridon, the leader of the nation's 2 million Greek Orthodox. In their letter to Spyridon, the priests asked him to follow recommendations passed at a recent Greek Orthodox convention calling for a task force to be appointed to study the firings and for the priests to be reinstated while the panel conducts its work.
A spokesman for Spyridon said the bishop had not received the letter because he is on vacation.
The letter was signed by the Reverends Alkiviadis C. Calivas, George Papademetriou, Emmanuel Clapsis, and Theodore G. Stylianopoulos.
Sources at the college have told the Globe that the four men were fired because they refused to cover up an alleged incident of sexual misconduct by a former seminarian. Archdiocesan officials say the firings were an effort to resolve personal conflicts at the school among administrators and faculty.
