Greek archbishop to be installed soon

NEW YORK - Archbishop Demetrios will be enthroned Sept. 18 as the leader of the 1.9 million Greek Orthodox Christians in the United States. Archbishop Demetrios was named in August to succeed Archbishop Spyridon, who resigned after a brief reign troubled by acrimony over his leadership. Both were appointed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Istanbul. The ceremony at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity will be conducted by Archbishop Iakovos, Archbishop Spyridon's predecessor, who retired in 1996. The following day, Archbishop Demetrios will celebrate the Eucharist at the cathedral with the eight U.S. Greek metropolitans and bishops.
