Archbishop Spyridon Receives Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney

New York, NY - Today His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of America, welcomed Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) on her first official visit to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

During their meeting, Archbishop Spyridon and Congresswoman Maloney discussed issues of mutual interests to the Greek Orthodox community. Of particular note, was the proposal of a Congressional Delegation to visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The purpose of such a visit would be to acquire a clearer picture of the issues facing the E.P. and to promote religious freedom for the Patriarchate and the on-going efforts of the Archdiocese for the re-opening of the Theological School of Halki.

Archbishop Spyridon also urged Congresswoman Maloney to call upon the State Department to pursue a formal inquiry regarding the integrity of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and the holy sites in Kosovo.

The Archbishop and Congresswoman Maloney also discussed additional issues including Archdiocesan sponsored activities commemorating twenty-five years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the continuing occupation of the island, the stability of the Balkans, and the territorial integrity of Greece.

Congresswoman Maloney represents the 14th district in New York City and serves on the House Banking and Financial Services Committee, among others. She is the co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues and has advocated for peace on Cyprus and enhanced relations between the United States and Greece.

Mr. John A. Catsimatidis, Vice-Chairman of the Archdiocesan Council; Anita Kartalopoulos, National Phioptochos Board Legal Advisor; and Marc Abrams, Executive Director for The Maloney Committee, were in attendance.
