The situation in the country became so dangerous in mid-March that Archbishop Spyridon, in a letter to the three Greek Orthodox missionaries from the Archdiocese, urged them to evacuate alone with other Americans which the State Department had likewise advised.
Frs. Martin Ritsi and Luke Veronis evacuated their families on flights leaving Albania. But the two priests, alone with lay missionary Penny Panagiota Delieiannis, decided to stay.
