Mayor comes calling

(Orthodox Observer photos)

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani made his first official visit to Archbishop Spyridon at Archdiocese headquarters on Jan. 15. The two discussed many subjects of interest in a meeting which stretched to more than an hour, including the upcoming visit in the fall of Patriarch Bartholomew. "We're very excited about it," commented Mayor Giuliani to journalists who covered the event. The mayor brought His Eminence a gift of a crystal apple (left), symbolizing the "Big Apple," and engraved with the city's seal. Archbishop Spyridon presented His Honor with an illustrated book about the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
