The Church Should Take Lessons from Microsoft
To the Editor:
I completely agree with Efstathios Valiotis’ op-ed piece “How Greek Orthodox Church Should Go about Choosing Next Archbishop of America” (May 31).

We at St. Nicholas in Flushing attempted that process prior to Spyridon’s appointment as archbishop.
The next phase should be to choose the right person. This should be done in the same manner as Microsoft choosing its next CEO, an executive search. If it is done correctly, another Iakovos can be discovered.
Someone like Mr. Valiotis, a Greek-born successful U.S. business owner, philanthropist, and theology graduate should play an active role in the process.
The right candidate should be found and introduced to the Laity, and in the process try to influence those who ultimately would make the decision. This cannot be solely the job of the bishops and the metropolitans.
If the wrong person is chosen, it would be just as bad as choosing a non-Greek-American candidate.
Naturally, the inner workings of this effort should be behind the scenes.
Rumor has it that Archbishop Demetrios’ “retirement” is in the works, so time is of the essence.
